The great pacific patch Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The great pacific patch - Essay Example The western and the eastern garbage patches form the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Larger proportion of the patch consists of the plastic that is not bio-degradable but instead, photodegradable releasing small plastic particles that are harmful to marine animals. The particles act like sponge that soak toxic chemicals in the sea and suspend on the sea water and seabed sediments. When fish and other marine animals feed on them, they may die and their predators may have less to feed on causing successive deaths (Curtin & Belcher, 2008). Changes in the sea life for algae and other marine life also affect human life. For example, changes in water temperatures disturb the numbers of bacteria and fungi in the waters with negative consequences on marine animals and fish. Fish is essential for the growing human population and diseases arising from microorganisms affect food attainability. Wastes from factories cause harm to these organisms and can as well poison wildlife and humans. Wastes from industries also lead to declining of the sea grasses and reduced pathogenic potentials. Sea skaters also lay their eggs on flotsam objects such as pumice and seashells. Increased number of plastic wastes in the seas and large water bodies has increased egg concentrations in the gyre area because the plastic garbage provides surface for laying of these eggs. The marine wastes can also disturb the food webs at the sea in the north pacific gyre. Planktons and algae on the basement of the sea use sunlight to make their own food. The trash that collects on the surface of water blocks the sunlight from reaching planktons and algae which are the most common autotrophs in the food web. The entire food web may change because fish and other small animals that feed on the planktons and algae will have less to feed on and as a result may die. The predators that feed on these fish will also be affected and the food web will be affected in whole (Bowler, Karl, & Colwell,

American Companies & Globalization Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
American Companies & Globalization - Essay Example The economy of the country has experienced slow growth in the recent past in spite of being the largest single market of the world. The success of the operating organizations depends on the situation that is prevailing within the country and abroad. The multinationals are much more interested in drawing their strategies keeping into account the global perspective. The activity of foreign affiliations is indeed a complement for the key parent activities in the country in terms of employment, compensations towards workers and capital investment. In order to operate globally it is required or the organizations to expand as well as integrate the foreign activities as such activities cannot be substituted. The expansion by the U.S. parents along with the affiliates contributes to increase the productivity and also contributes to improve the standard of living of all Americans. The rising concerns for the U.S. multinationals are mainly focused on the competitiveness. The success of the mul tinationals is very important as these companies have been productive for a long time and form the pillars of economic strength. The companies are engaged in serving the fast growing markets abroad. The following figure reports the share of the private sector economic activities of U.S. that is accounted for by U.S. parents. It can be depicted from the figure above that parent companies of United States perform large shares of the productivity of America which tends to enhance the activities paving the path for high average compensation for the workers of the country. Accessing the foreign consumers is one of the drivers for the global engagements of the U.S. multinationals. The new customers can contribute in strengthening the revenues of the companies as well as the profitability of the company will witness the upward rising curve. The Statistics show a variation in the rate of GDP over the periods. One can held the evolving size of the national markets and the perspective of the consumers as the reason. When a U.S. multinational operates globally, the company can take hold of foreign currencies which they can divert into the economy of the residing country. Therefore, the economy boosts up with foreign inflow and thereby the company contributes in improving the economic structure of the country as a whole. The multinationals involved in producing goods and services are also engaged in exploration of resources and extraction. Following the policy of diversifying the products and global engagements, the U.S. multinationals are reducing the risk of crisis since a slowdown in one of the countries can be nullified by prosperity in the other. Therefore, indirectly, the economy of the country is as well enjoying a shield against the turbulences. The multinationals also contribute in increasing the exports of the country. The Balance of Payments of the country improves being the resultant. The integrated operations that the multinationals follow across borders stim ulate the exports potential of the country. Let us take the example of IBM. Even today when U.S. remains as the largest single market the company earns more than two-thirds of the total profits from abroad. A great deal of sales accrues from the exports of U.S. or the products which are produced or designed in the country. The company annually brings the economy billions of dollars from its global operations. In the last two years, the company repatriated more than 20 billion dollars

Time and Happiness Essay Example for Free
Time and Happiness Essay Good morning everyone. The topic I have chosen is WHAT IS HAPPINESS. Nowadays, many people think money can buy happiness so that they will work over ten hours to earn more money. They think that if we are rich then, we can do anything such as buy a fat dog, a big house, a grand car or many luxurious things LV bag, DOIR shoe and so on. It cannot be denied that material life is happiness because you can buy the things you want but I think material life can only give me happiness for a short period of time which is external happiness. I think cultural life can give you a long term happiness and this is happiness from heart. There are three simple ways of gaining happiness that I would like to mention about. First of all, good relationship with friends and family are the main points to become happiness. The reason is I can get more love and sense of care from them . When I feel unhappy or I am in a problem, they are the ones who help me solve the problem and give me support all the time. Although they have never tried to make me happy by buying me some expensive things such as i-phone, i-pad, I can never doubt in their support and love for meâ⬠¦and that feeling is what makes me happy. Therefore, I love my family and friends and I am very proud to say that I have a very good relationship with them. The next point that I want to focus on is my dream because self-realization can let me gain pursuit of eternal value. I have some small goals as well as some big, I will never let go of these dreams that I have been dreaming of.. In spite of all the difficulties that I will have to face during this phase, I will try my best to enjoy them and tackle them because these steps can let me know and learn how to be mature and independent. Therefore, the pursuit of eternal value will be eternal happiness. The last thing that gives me happiness is helping the needy people. The reason is I can get more meaningful and wonderful time in my busy life. Undeniably, volunteer can not earn money or waste time but I do not think so. When I help the needy people, I will earn more naive and satisfaction in their possession. And I think, for me this is happinessâ⬠¦Getting to help others and doing some good deeds To conclude, good relationship of friendship and family, achieving my dream and helping others are the main three points that gives me the exact meaning of happiness. These things not only give me a long term happiness , but also gives me the satisfaction and the feeling of happiness from heart. You see, these are not the material things. I can say the simple cultural life is happiness in my heart because I know ââ¬ËHappy is he who is contentââ¬â¢. I hope that you can find the right meaning of happiness in Your Life. Thank You!

Landscape Architecture as a Profession :: Research
Landscape Architecture as a Profession A landscape architect is an individual who arranges and modifies the effects of natural scenery over a tract of land so as to produce the best aesthetic effect for the land's use. Landscape architecture is the design profession which applies artistic, cultural, and scientific knowledge to the design, planning, and development of the land. Landscape architects accept certain responsibilities related to the health and welfare of the public and are concerned with resource conservation of the land. The practice of landscape architecture requires an appreciation and understanding of natural and social processes, a creative imagination, and a commitment to preserve or improve the environment for human use and enjoyment. Landscape architects plan the most harmonious relationships between the land and the objects on it by proper combination of open space and planting, and by wise use of land formation (Concise 151). They may work on parks, gardens, housing projects, school campuses, golf courses, or airports. They begin a project by reviewing the needs and desires of the client. They study the site, mapping such features as the slope of the land, existing structures and the type of soil. They check local building codes and availability of utilities, make drawings which outline the work in detail, and draw up lists of materials to be used. They then invite bids from construction companies and landscape nursery companies. With the awarding of the contracts, their work may be finished, or they may stay on to supervise the work as their clientââ¬â¢s representative (151). A major branch of landscape architecture, golf course architecture, integrates the skills of a landscape architect on a larger scale. The aim a golf course architect is to create a truly great golf course by utilizing to the fullest extent possible the potential of a promising piece of land (Golfplan 1). This potential is expressed in the siteââ¬â¢s location, slope, vegetation, water features, soil types, climate and orientation. The role a golf course architect is the realization of this potential under the constraints of design criteria that separate the truly great golf course from the ordinary (1). Landscape architecture, the science and art of modifying land areas by organizing natural, cultivated, or constructed elements according to an aesthetic plan (Encarta 1). The elements include topographical features such as hills, valleys, rivers, and ponds; and growing things such as trees, shrubbery, grass, and flowers; and constructions such as buildings, terraces, roads, bridges, fountains, and statuary. No unalterable rules exist in landscape architecture because each plot of ground offers unique problems caused by variation in contour, climate, and surrounding areas
The Homeless In England :: essays research papers
The Homeless in England Introduction I decided to study the homeless' situation before we went to England, so I tried to get information about it via the internet, but it was so much information that I soon gave up... When we got to England I thought about changing subject to the pub culture because it seemed easier to write about, but after a few days I had seen so many homeless people that I got used to it and therefor dared to talk to them and ask them questions about their situation and why they where homeless. Many people just walked right by the homeless without even look at them (rather the reverse, look another way), but other people stopped to talk to them and buy their paper. I've used the homeless people as sources and also their paper. When I came home I searched on the internet to get information and there was a lot of it, so I choosed some headings and took a closer look at them. Who's homeless? I thought, before I went to England, that every homeless person was that by his/her own choice, but after talking to them and read about it I know that some of the homeless is that by their own choice. They choose to be homeless for different reasons, like a protest against the society or just to try the homeless life. 25% of the homeless are war veterans and most of them from Vietnam. They are mentally traumatised by their war experiences, some of them are disable and others are just unable to find work so they can pay a rent. 25% of the homeless are children and many of them are alone. They're maybe run- aways who left home because there was no food at home, or because they're victims of rape, incest or violence. Many of them are "throwaways", whose parents tell them to leave home or won't allow them to return home once they've left. Many of the homeless are elderly people with fixed income, and I guess that's not the traditional image of homeless people. They receive about à £450 a month in benefits and if they pay à £350 for rent it's pretty logical that they can't live a decent life. Many elderly people are living in poverty in an apartment with no proper heating, no water etc., and many of the elderly homeless are afraid to go to soup kitchens or shelters, so they aren't seen on the streets. Myths There's a lot of myths going around about the homeless. Very often these myths are told by someone without any or with just a little knowledge about the

Life and Career of Mariah Carey Essay
With her unique talent and signature vocal abilities, Mariah Carey commanded the worldââ¬â¢s attention when she made her musical debut in the early nineties. In less than a decade, Mariah Carey emerged as one of the most popular and widely acclaimed talents in music. As a singer and songwriter, Carey has been recognized with the most prestigious accolades in the industry, including two Grammy Awards, Billboardââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Artist of the Decadeâ⬠Award and the World Music Award for ââ¬Å"Worldââ¬â¢s Best Selling Female Artist of the Milleniumâ⬠to name a few (IMDb. com). As the best-selling female performer of all time, Mariah Carey has continuously raised the bar and set the standard of excellence within the music industry worldwide. With a mother who shared both talent and a love of music, Carey was destined for a life of song, having been named after ââ¬Å"They Call the Wind Mariahâ⬠a melody from a popular Lerner and Loewe musical. From an early age, Carey demonstrated extraordinary musical abilities. She started singing at the tender age of four and her innate talent quickly progressed. While attending middle school, Carey began honing her songwriting skills and upon high school graduation she immediately left for New York City to pursue a lifetime ambition ââ¬â her dream of a musical career. A Star is Born Mariah Carey rose to superstardom on the strength of her stunning five-octave voice; an elastic talent who moved easily from glossy ballads to hip-hop-inspired dance-pop, she earned frequent comparison to rivals Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, but did them both one better by composing all of her own material. Carey moved to New York City at the age of 17 ââ¬â just one day after graduating high school ââ¬â to pursue a music career; there she befriended keyboardist Ben Margulies, with whom she began writing songs. Her big break came as a backing vocalist on a studio session with dance-pop singer Brenda K. Starr, who handed Careyââ¬â¢s demo tape to Columbia Records head Tommy Mottola at a party. This occurred just ten months after graduating from high school and she was then a coat checker/waitress in Manhattan. According to legend, Mottola listened to the tape in his limo while driving home that same evening, and was so immediately struck by Careyââ¬â¢s talent that he doubled back to the party to track her down. After signing to Columbia, Carey entered the studio to begin work on her 1990 self-titled debut LP; the heavily promoted album was a chart-topping smash, launching no less than four number one singles: ââ¬Å"Vision of Love,â⬠ââ¬Å"Love Takes Time,â⬠ââ¬Å"Someday,â⬠and ââ¬Å"I Donââ¬â¢t Wanna Cry. â⬠Her overnight success earned Grammy awards as Best New Artist and Best Female Vocalist (IMDb. com), and expectations were high for Careyââ¬â¢s follow-up, 1991ââ¬â¢s Emotions. The album did not disappoint, as the title track reached number one ââ¬â a record fifth consecutive chart-topper ââ¬â while both ââ¬Å"Canââ¬â¢t Let Goâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Make It Happenâ⬠landed in the Top Five. Careyââ¬â¢s next release was 1992ââ¬â¢s MTV Unplugged EP under Sony, which generated a number one cover of the Jackson 5ââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll Be There. â⬠This album sold two million copies. Featured on the track was backup singer Trey Lorenz, whose appearance immediately helped him land a recording contract of his own. A Period of Success and Surprises In June 1993, Carey wed Mottola ââ¬â some two decades her senior ââ¬â in a headline-grabbing ceremony; months later she released her third full-length effort, Music Box. This was released to strong sales, making it her first Number One album since her debut and is considered her best-selling record to date. Two more singles, ââ¬Å"Dreamloverâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Hero,â⬠reached the top spot on the charts. Careyââ¬â¢s first tour followed and was widely panned by critics; undaunted, she resurfaced in 1994 with a holiday release titled Merry Christmas, scoring a seasonal smash with ââ¬Å"All I Want for Christmas Is You. â⬠1995ââ¬â¢s Daydream reflected a new artistic maturity; the first single, ââ¬Å"Fantasy,â⬠debuted at number one, making Carey the first female artist and just the second performer ever to accomplish the feat. The follow-up, ââ¬Å"One Sweet Dayâ⬠ââ¬â a collaboration with Boyz II Men ââ¬â repeated the trick, and remained lodged at the top of the charts for a record 16 weeks (IMDb. com). After separating from Mottola, Carey returned in 1997 with Butterfly, another staggering success and her most hip-hop-flavored recording to date. #1ââ¬â¢s ââ¬â a collection featuring her 13 previous chart-topping singles as well as ââ¬Å"The Prince of Egypt (When You Believe),â⬠a duet with Whitney Houston effectively pairing the two most successful female recording artists in pop history ââ¬â followed late the next year. With ââ¬Å"Heartbreaker,â⬠the first single from her 1999 album Rainbow, Carey became the first artist to top the charts in each year of the 1990s; the record also pushed her ahead of the Beatles as the artist with the most cumulative weeks spent atop the Hot 100 singles chart (IMDb. com). Breaking Down However, the early 2000s werenââ¬â¢t as kind to Carey. After signing an 80-million-dollar deal in 2001 with Virgin ââ¬â the biggest record contract ever ââ¬â she experienced a very public personal and professional meltdown that included rambling; suicidal messages on her website; an appearance on TRL where, clad only in a T-shirt, she handed out Popsicles to the audience; and last but not least, the poorly received movie Glitter and its attendant soundtrack (which was also her Virgin Records debut). Both the film and the album did poorly critically as well as commercially, with Glitter making just under four million dollars in its total U. S. gross and the soundtrack struggling to make gold sales (Johnson, 2001). Following these setbacks, Virgin and Carey parted ways early in 2002, with the label paying her 28 million dollars. That spring, she found a new home with Island/Def Jam, where she set up her own label, MonarC Music. In December, she released her ninth album, Charmbracelet, which failed to become a success. The Emancipation of Mimi After more than a decade of hits that include the staggering success of 15 #1 singles, Carey released her most revealing album to date, The Emancipation of Mimi, in April of 2005. Entirely written and co-produced by the gifted Carey, her tenth studio album is an intimate portrayal of both the challenges and successes that she experienced during her rise to unparalleled fame. Carey explains the inspiration behind her new album, ââ¬Å"With this album, I am embracing my independence and celebrating the person that I have become. Over the years, I have evolved into a better person and an even better artist. For the first time in my life, I am proud and unafraid to be who I really am, and thatââ¬â¢s what the music of this album and its title reflect. By naming my album The Emancipation of Mimi andreferencing ââ¬ËMimiââ¬â¢ a nickname only used by those closest to me, I am inviting my fans into my life. â⬠A brilliant artist who has co-written every song on each of her albums since 1990, Mariah Carey has consistently shown her willingness to express herself both as a remarkable vocalist and an acclaimed songwriter. The Emancipation of Mimi offers more than a glimpse into Mariahââ¬â¢s world featuring tunes like the heartfelt ââ¬Å"Circlesâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Fly Like a Bird,â⬠with their positive messages of affirmation and hope. While being honest and vulnerable in expressing her emotions through songs like ââ¬Å"I Wish You Knewâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Joyride,â⬠Mariah leaves no doubt that she is a woman who speaks her mind. The infectious, edgy ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s Like That,â⬠co-produced by Jermaine Dupri is the albumââ¬â¢s first hit single and a definitive statement of where Mariah stands at this point in her life, and is her fastest climbing single in five years. At Present On April 15, 2008, Mariah released her latest album, entitled ââ¬Å"Touch My Bodyâ⬠. Already well acclaimed by the critics, the album serves as a culmination of the fact that Mariah Carey is indeed back and better than ever. She has put all of her past ordeals behind, as is now just looking to push through with her ever increasing success. With ââ¬Å"Touch My Bodyâ⬠as a number one hit, she overtook Elvis Pressly as having the most number one hit singles of all time. Truly, this was a sign of good things to come for the very talented singer and song writer. During the month of May, Mariah Carey married actor Nick Cannon in what was considered as one of the biggest shockers of the year. Cannon, who was more than a decade younger than Carey, is considered by many to be perhaps ââ¬Å"the luckiest manâ⬠, with Mariah Carey estimated to worth tens of millions of dollars. Many doubt their marriage as a publicity stunt, but the couple has presented themselves to be well into their marriage. But only time will tell whether this marriage is built to last, or Cannon will be just another chapter in Mariah Careyââ¬â¢s roller coaster life. Charitable Works Apart from her musical achievements, Mariah Careyââ¬â¢s depth of person stems from her love and support of children in need; evident through her continuous involvement in a host of charities dedicated to ensuring their happiness and well being. Mariah is devoted to such charities as The Make-A-Wish Foundation, The Fresh Air Fund, Save the Music, and The National Adoption Center to name a few. With an unwavering effort through appearances, concerts, and donations to these organizations, Mariah has raised millions of dollars. Her generous involvement and on-going support of the Fresh Air Fund resulted in Camp Mariah, the fundââ¬â¢s first camp named in honor of an individual. Conclusion To conclude, Mariah Carey has indeed had a very colorful career since she broke into the music scene almost twenty years ago. She has proven time and time again that she is here to stay, and have weathered all the trials that have been thrown at her. With a voice that is unmatched and a song writing skill that is rare these days, Mariah has been able to reinvent herself in each single and keep her sound fresh for her fans. Of all the successes and failures that she has experienced, one thing is for certain: Mariah is not going to go down easily, and she will remain atop the charts until someone takes the throne away from her.
